Alec Soth was commissioned for Brighton Photoworks festival to take photos in/of Brighton. Scared off by a zealous UK borders employee who threatened him with consequences for not having the right paperwork if he so much as touched a camera, Carmen, his 8 year old daughter took the pictures.

In this book, celebrated American photographer Alec Soth collaborated with his seven-year-old daughter Carmen to create a new body of work made in Brighton, specially commissioned by Photoworks for the Brighton Photo Biennial 2010. Like much of Soth’s previous work, the photographic journey combines poetic and documentary sensibilities, each photograph and idea leading to the next. People, places and objects are woven amongst local newspaper headlines. Serendipity is at play as text and image combine to make uncanny connections and provide a captivating portrait of a city.
