A graduate of Goldsmiths College, Taylor-Johnson uses photography, film, video installation and sound to explore human relationships and emotions. Her sources vary from Renaissance and Baroque painting to Hollywood cinema. In films like Noli Me Tangere (1998) and photographs such as Wrecked (1996) she explores boundaries between sacred and profane. Since her 1995 solo show at White Cube, she has exhibited nationally and internationally. In 1997 she won the Illy Café Prize for Most Promising New Artist at the Venice Biennale and was a Turner Prize nominee in 1998. The Hayward Gallery hosted a major survey of her work in 2002. Films she has directed include Nowhere Boy (2009) and Fifty Shades of Grey (2015).
